About ten thousand people celebrate the Islamic New Year today in Sport Palace Senayan.
Many events and religious rituals were performed at various places as well as praying at the Vice President's residence.

The Human Rights Torch

The Human Rights Torch going around Jakarta from Bung Karno Sport Arena to the Hotel Indonesia square on January 4, 2008.

Using the same source as Olympic torch, the human rights torch was lighted in Athens on August 9, 2007 and had travel across five continents ever since.
The relay is a part of international campaign as a call out to end human rights violation on Chinese people in particular the Falun Gong followers.

The torch then leave Jakarta to Surabaya, Yogyakarta, Bali, and Batam. Further will go to Srilanka and will end up in China.

The brand new South Line

A new train line was launched today, called "KRL AC South Line". KRL means electric train (to differ from the old "kereta api" - powered by coals); while AC just to stress that they equipped the train with air-condition. It is far more comfortable than the KRL Depok, similar with TransJakarta bus.

The new train line serves for Depok-Manggarai with ticket price of Rp6,000. The ticket also valid for the Ciliwung Blue Line, the inner city route. In this case Manggarai station serves as a transit to other destination in the route.

The City government hopes that the comfort that the new mass transportation line offers will help to solve the congestion.

Monas New Year's Eve

The celebration for the coming 2008 year will be started from 16:00 on December 31 in Monas Plaza.
Various music groups will perform on stages, and fireworks will mark the end of 2007 year.
While all roads around Monas Plaza will be closed except the the east side --Jalan Medan Merdeka Timur-- parking lots will be centralized in three spots: Istiqlal Mosque, Gambir Station and the usual IRTI parking. The road closing will be effective from 16:00 till 02:00 the next morning.

It is advised for people to put their motorized vehicles somewhere else and go to Monas using non motorized or TransJakarta busway instead.
About three millions people were expected will come around the Monas. Police has prepared its 1.700 personnels, while City Traffic Department put on duty their 150 personnels. 300 security guards also prepared by the City Law and Order Department.

Six zero car zones in Jakarta

On Sunday, December 30, the Sudirman-Thamrin road will be closed for motorized traffics. The Car Free Day is a monthly program now, every fourth Sunday.

Between 06:00 - 14:00 only pedestrian, bikers, non-motorized vehicles and TransJakarta buses will be allowed to enjoy the zero car zone in Sudirman-Thamrin road. During that time the officials will measure the air quality and gas emissions.
On 2006 there was 45 car free days, and 60 days on 2007 till November.
Nowadays the five Jakarta municipals are researching the suitable roads to be their own monthly Car Free Day zone. Hopefully soon we will have cleaner air than now with 6 zero car zones every month.

Some roads will be closed


To speed up the realisation of busway corridor Cililitan-Tanjung Priok, tomorrow the City Government will close some roads for two days, 10 - 11 November 2007.

The junction Jl Ahmad Yani-Rawamangun and Jl. Ahmad Yani-Rawasari will be closed for traffics from 22:00 on Saturday till 24:00 on Sunday.

Traffics from west side (Utan Kayu) have to go arround at the junction Jl. Pramuka. Traffics from east side (Rawamangun) could go round in the front of golf course or at the Bea Cukai office. [source: Koran Tempo]

New sister city

Jakarta has a new, 20th sister city. Governor Fauzi Bowo has signed the MoU with the Pyongyang Vice Kim Jok Sik in Jakarta today.

Industry and trade, development and management; environment management, culture, education and sport, and tourism are the coordination sectors between two cities.

Jong Sik stated that the sister city coordination is important for relationship between Jakarta and Pyongyang especially Indonesia and Korea. “I’m so happy to see the Jakarta’s advance in several development sectors.”
